What is a Mouth Ulcer?

Ulcer Ease Mouth Sore ReliefWhether you call it a mouth ulcer, oral ulcer, mouth sore, or canker sore, you are most likely referring to what doctors call an apthous ulcer or apthous stomatitis. The most common type of mouth ulcer is the canker sore.

Products proven to provide relief for canker sores include:

A canker sore is caused by a virus. It is a shallow ulcer that develops only inside the mouth and may be triggered by various substances or stress. A canker sore is NOT contagious. (Cold sores are highly contagious).

Common triggers for canker sores include:

  2. Consuming certain foods, including vinegar, soy, French mustard, pineapples, tomatoes, lemons, cheese, milk, some nuts, apples, figs, shellfish, buckwheat, whole wheat, rye, barley, flour, and chocolate.

  3. Stress.

  4. Deficiency in folic acid, iron, thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), or vitamin B12.

What is a Mouth Sore?

Location

  • A canker sore forms only on the loose tissue inside the mouth.

Characteristics

  • Round or oval in shape
  • Usually no more than ΒΌ-inch in diameter
  • Each ulcer is shallow and individual
  • The edges of the ulcer will be regular and reddish
  • The center of the ulcer will white or gray
  • PAINFUL!
  • Heals within 7 - 14 days
